Boats and Partisanship

Is there a link between voting patterns in an area and boat ownership?

Republicans love boats. While this graph was initally intended to compare GDP in an area to boat ownership, it also shows that Republicans like boats a lot more than Democrats. Every county that registers average boat ownership of above .1 boats per person voted Republican in the most recent presidential election. What this shows is that if a county has high levels of boat ownership, it almost certainly votes Republican. Finally, this graph also reveals that high levels of GDP do not necessarily lead to high boat ownership, in fact almost the opposite is true with the highest levels of boat ownership occuring in counties with low GDP. There could be a number of causes for this with these counties possibly being small fishing towns, where people use their boats to survive, or they could be retirement towns where the town does not produce much, but its residents all own boats for fun.

This graph further shows that counties with high boat ownership are almost certain to vote Republican, however it also shows that not all Republican counties have high personal boat ownership. In fact, the majority of Republican counties have similar boat per person levels to Democratic counties, however the small number of high level boat ownership counties are all Republican leaning areas.
